PBS Learning Media provides PreK-12 educators with access to free digital content and professional development opportunities designed to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement. The website includes lesson content and information on content standard, all of which is searchable by content area and grade level.
PBS Learning Media for Students
PBS Learning Media for Students provides K-12 students with science, math, and arts resources. Students can search assignments, projects, videos, and other resources, and mark the ones they like best as favorites to return to later on.
Developed by the University of Nottingham, Periodic Videos contains an interactive periodic table of elements. By clicking on any element, a video opens where a chemistry expert from the University explains the properties of that element, how and when it was discovered, and may include an experiment that highlights the properties of the element. The site also includes educational videos on chemistry-related topics such as acid rain, the formation of diamonds, phosphine and Venus, and more.
PhET provides fun, free, interactive, research-based science and mathematics simulations for K-12 students and educators. The simulations are written in Java, Flash or HTML5, and can be run online or downloaded to your computer. Simulations cover topics within physics, biology, chemistry, and other areas of science.
Physics4Kids has information on motion, heat and thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, light, and modern physics topics. Lessons, activities, and quizzes can be modified and incorporated into K-12 classrooms as a resource to students of all ages by providing simple explanations of physics concepts. To fund the site, some pages have advertising.
Plum Landing (PBS)
Plum Landing is an environmental science project from WGBH Boston that helps kids develop a love for, and connection to, the planet. Plum Landing invites kids ages six to nine to get to know their world through a collection of fun and engaging games, apps, videos, and hands-on science activities. Each Plum Landing curriculum pathway provides a set of activities and media resources arranged in a thematic sequence and aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. These pathways were put together with informal educators in mind—those running afterschool programs, summer camps or other out-of-school time programs.
Project Learning Garden
The Captain Planet Foundation's Project Learning Garden offers activities curated for elementary and middle school students, all focused on learning ideas and concepts that can be found in a garden. Each entry includes instructions and notes the science standards addressed in the activity. The activities can be sorted by subject and grade level. Subjects covered in activities include science, math, health and nutrition, art and music, and more. To fund the site, some pages request voluntary donations and advertise store merchandise.
Purplemath.com provides a wide range of math lessons including explanations and videos of math concept. The site also offers homework guides, study skills quizzes, and courses ranging from 5th grade to college level. To support the site, some pages contain ads.
